Unnamed Temples to the Buddha and Lord Guan 無名佛殿、關公廟 – (Yu County 蔚縣, 18th-19th centuries [??])

Location info and some photos withheld. As of my last visit, this mural site is vulnerable to theft or destruction. I have withheld the location beneath the county level and any photographs (of steles, signs, scenery, etc.) that might identify the place. If you are an accredited scholar and you have a good reason to want to see this information, email me and we’ll talk about it.

Structure Type: Village Temples 村廟.

Location: The two temples are just within the gate of the old fort. The Temple to Lord Guan faces south, looking out of the gate. The Buddha Hall faces east.

Period: Undated. I’d say 18th or early 19th century based on style, but this could be off.

Artist: Unknown.

Mural Contents: All of these murals are heavily damaged and badly faded, but the style is actually quite nice if you look at it. The murals in the Buddha Hall show the Life of Śākyamuni 佛專故事.

The murals in the Temple to Lord Guan show scenes from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms 三國演義.
