Unnamed Temple to the Perfected Warrior 02 無名真武廟 – (Yu County 蔚縣, 19th century)

Location info and some photos withheld. As of my last visit, this mural site is vulnerable to theft or destruction. I have withheld the location beneath the county level and any photographs (of steles, signs, scenery, etc.) that might identify the place. If you are an accredited scholar and you have a good reason to want to see this information, email me and we’ll talk about it.

Structure Type: Village Temple 村廟.

Location: The temple is located on a small plinth at the northern end of the axial road of the old fort, facing south towards the now-vanished gate.

Period: Undated. Most of the temples to the Perfected Warrior in Yu County were established with the foundation of the village forts in the sixteenth century. The murals, however, are clearly 19th century in style.

Artist: Unknown.

Mural Contents: The northern wall shows the Perfected Warrior, seated in state beneath a black flag with the sign of the Northern Dipper on it. Flanking him to either side are the Peach-Blossom Girl 桃花女 and the Duke of Zhou 周公. The two side walls show the Twelve Primordial Generals of the Thunder Bureau 雷部十二元帥.

Other Notes: The old man who uses this building as a storage shed initially let me in to photograph, but for some reason became uncomfortable and kicked me out after a few minutes inside. Nevertheless by this point I had photographed the main parts of the murals.
