Unnamed Dragon King Temple 02 無名龍王廟 — (Jia County 佳縣, 19th century [??])

Location info and some photos withheld. As of my last visit, this mural site is vulnerable to theft or destruction. I have withheld the location beneath the county level and any photographs (of steles, signs, scenery, etc.) that might identify the place. If you are an accredited scholar and you have a good reason to want to see this information, email me and we’ll talk about it.

Structure Type: Village Temple 村廟.

Location: Jia county, Shaanxi Province 陝西佳縣. The temple is located on an empty hilltop, some ways above the nearby village.

Period: Undated. Guessing 19th century from the style.

Artist: Unknown.

Mural Contents: The murals show the Mother of Waters 水母, the Dragon Kings of the Five Seas 五海龍王, and the Master of Rain 雨師 enthroned on the main wall. The side-walls show the ride of the dragons out and back from the Crystal Palace 水晶宮 to dispense rain. On the lower registers, as is common in northern Shaanxi, are the Gods of the Five Ways 五道神, capturing demons.

Other Notes: I put this up as a nice example of Shaanbei style, with the fine attention to line on the front wall.
