Structure Type: Opera stage 戲台.

Location: East Great-Peace Village, Yu County, Hebei Province 河北省蔚縣東太平村. The stage faces north to a now-vanished temple. The whole complex was located outside of the south gate of the walled village.

Period: Undated. Early 20th century.

Artist: Unknown.

Mural Contents: The murals are located on the outer side-walls of the stage, abutting the scaenae frons 隔扇牆. The murals show “Western-Ocean Buildings” 西洋樓, and specifically scenes from the novel and opera Pavilion of Gazing in the Four Directions 四望亭. In order to accentuate the exotic “occidenterie” of these buildings, the artist has written nonsense “western” letters along the lintels of the buildings.
