Temple to Lord Guan and the Dragon Kings at Little Flourishing Fort 小昌城村關公、龍王廟 — (Huairen County 懷仁縣, 19th century)

Structure Type: Village Temple 村廟. There is an opera stage 戲台 across from it in the south.

Location: Little Flourishing Fort Village, Huairen County, Shanxi Province 山西省懷仁縣小昌城村. This village should once have been walled, but little now remains of it – the temple is located to the west of the old part of the village.

Period: 19th century, from style.

Artist: Unknown.

Mural Contents: The two flanking walls of the temple show two different iconographies. One side shows the Dragon Kings 龍王 riding out and back from the Crystal Palace 水晶宮 to dispense rain, the other side shows a paneled narrative based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms 三國演義. Neither mural is particularly attractive or well preserved, and someone has painted a reflective glaze over them so they’re impossible to photograph with a flash. The more interesting things are the triangular panels in the rafters, which show surprisingly dynamic and attractive scenes from the Romance.
